From On-Premise PIM to SaaS PIM
A major shift in the PIM/PXM world: on-premise is a thing of the past, SaaS is becoming the new normal. A good time to reflect on your current situation. Are you switching to SaaS? And are you doing so with your existing PIM supplier? Or might another PIM package better suit your needs and ambitions?
Imagine: You have been living in the same house for years, but you realize that you would like to make some changes. For example, you want to add a dormer window, convert the shed, or renovate the bathroom. The question is how big these changes are. Is it a renovation of what you already have? Or are you ready for something completely new?
If you really want to renovate on a large scale, it may be wiser to buy a new home. Then you can take another look at your needs and those of your family, as well as your future needs. You will then immediately create something that will last you at least the next 20 years.
Change in PIM and PXM
Actually, we see the same change in the product information/experience management world. A lot of companies have had the same PIM system, which they once implemented, for years. But their business has grown, the market and customers have changed, new marketplaces have emerged. In short, the needs of the organisation are no longer the same as what they were when the PIM system was implemented.
Naturally, software vendors try to respond to this. They do this with updates and modifications to the software. Sometimes this then suddenly does not match well with your business.
From on-premise to SaaS
The software world is changing from what we call "on-premise" to "SaaS". On-premise means the software is installed specifically for you and updated once or twice a year. However, more and more software suppliers are changing to SaaS (Software as a Service), which means no more dedicated installation for you. However, new updates, features and adjustments to the software are constantly coming.
In our opinion, this is a very positive development. It is cost-effective and greatly improves security and safety.
A good time to pause
Do you currently have an on-premise solution and does your existing supplier want you to switch to a SaaS solution? If so, this is a good time to pause for a moment.
After all, this change is no longer about remodelling your dormer or enlarging your shower. For a software vendor, it means rebuilding their software from scratch (if they want to do it right). Going from on-premise to SaaS is also basically a completely new implementation and project.
Therefore, this is the perfect time to reorient yourself in the market. What other solutions are out there and do they perhaps better match the needs you have now, and in the future?
In our experience, rethinking is smart in this case. After all, it is an opportunity to make a new improvement step. You might come to the conclusion that your existing software, in its new SaaS form, still completely suits your needs. Great!
But what if the conclusion goes the other way, and another solution is a better fit after the years of development in your company?
