Pillar 3: Make PIM a trusted source of knowledge for AI
The Agentic Age is changing how your products are discovered, compared and recommended. In this series, we explore four pillars that show what this means for PIM and product data in practice. AI is only as reliable as the sources it draws on. Discover how to position PIM as the central knowledge layer for AI assistants and agents.
Almost every organisation is now experimenting with AI assistants, from customer service bots and inside sales support to product advisors on e-commerce platforms. But these solutions only work when their answers are consistent and traceable. When assistants give different answers to the same product question, trust quickly disappears.
Source data as direct input
More and more AI solutions use a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) approach. With this method, an AI assistant actively retrieves information from the web and from systems such as PIM or a knowledge base before generating an answer.
No reliable source, no reliable answer
Avoid guesswork
In practice, inconsistencies rarely originate from the AI model itself. They usually stem from the underlying data. Examples include incomplete attributes, conflicting fields between ERP and PIM, and a lack of data governance. The result? A chatbot that has to guess.

The role of PIM
PIM is evolving from a product database into an authoritative source of knowledge for AI systems. It brings together commercial, technical and compliance data, enriched with context from sources such as reviews and customer feedback. This ensures that AI assistants work with validated and traceable product data.
PIM plays a central role by:
- Making only validated product information available to AI assistants and agents.
- Defining relationships between products, applications and classifications.
- Ensuring consistent definitions and terminology across systems and channels.
- Making information traceable to its source and version.
- Aligning with external standards and data structures.
What does this mean for your organisation?
Do not connect internal AI assistants directly to arbitrary sources. Explicitly position PIM as the central knowledge layer and configure access rights and validation processes to ensure that answers remain reliable.
